In my first video monologue in a while, I discuss the deteriorating state of Britain and explore some of the themes and symmetries in Cormac McCarthy’s works, No Country for Old Men and Blood Meridian. Is our future to be a dog-eat-dog state of nature? And did McCarthy embed allusions to the mythic barbarism of Meridian within No Country?

Moreover, what does this reveal about the trajectory in the UK, and who or what is responsible for it?

Endeavour and I dive into the magnificent 1948 account of Robert Falcon Scott’s heroic but ultimately doomed attempt to be the first man to reach the South Pole. We discuss how Scott’s raw Faustian Spirit had little regard for financial or scientific incentives, the brilliant soundtrack by Vaughn Williams, and the benefits of patriotism.

In light of Keir Starmer’s controversial (and surprising) ‘‘Island of Strangers’’ speech against mass immigration, I speculate on how the Boriswave might have up-ended the leftist view of mass immigration.

The right-wing mythology of mass immigration, post-Blair, often invokes the plot revealed by Andrew Neather to ‘‘rub the right’s nose in diversity’’. But what does that say about the Conservative Party? who were more than happy to rub their own and everyone else’s faces in diversity.

I joined Academic Agent’s panel reviewing the work of documentary maker Adam Curtis. In this episode, we delve into the history of Britain’s post-war social housing boom, which led to the development of substandard high-rise and Brutalist architecture in the country.
